Best Laptops for AutoCAD – Complete Buying Guide 2021

Last Updated on February 12, 2021

There are loads of laptops out there- each one with a different specialized specification- which might leave a buyer baffled, but do not worry because we have got everything sorted out. In the list of the laptops that will follow, you can’t go wrong if you buy any one of them, nonetheless, the distinguishing factor of each laptop will be mentioned so one may buy a laptop which assists his/ her need.

Since the architects and the engineers of very recent times have a significant percentage of their work time is constituted of fieldwork, the need for a portable machine capable of running all the required tasks smoothly became a must. Consequently, laptops for this purpose emerged which developed a lot – and are still developing – over time!

What to look for in a laptop for AutoCAD

Auto Computer Aided Design (AutoCAD) is the modern requirement for any engineer or architect and it is a super resourceful for producing 2-D or 3-D designs. Besides that, CAD is also very intensive on the laptop hardware, therefore not every laptop is capable enough handling this task. A laptop which is suitable for the very purpose must excel in some of its qualities which are mentioned below.

Since all of the tasks performed will be processed by the processor so it needs to be at the top of its game to allow the best user experience along with the best performance. Processor is the fundamental performance determining factor of a laptop – better the processor, better the performance.

The cores of a processor do matter. More the number of cores, more simultaneous tasks a processor can perform. Although single and dual core processors are more or less out dated today (most processors today have four cores), but determination of the right thing might well save you a handful of money.

If you plan to mostly use 2-D CAD, a dual core processor can be sufficient, unlike 3-D CAD which is much more of a stress on the processor. One thing to keep in mind, some of the latest 2-D CAD applications may include some features which will require the utilization of multiple cores, so upgrade to a Quad core processor for this purpose wouldn’t be a bad choice!

The Random-Access Memory (RAM) allows multi-tasking. This volatile form of memory allows applications in runtime to open in itself, therefore a greater RAM will allow greater multitasking, by allowing more applications to open up at the same time, without affecting the speed of the device.

For a 2-D CAD, and 8 GB RAM would suffice and a 16 GB RAM would be required for a 3-D CAD, but ill advice you to go for at least a 3 GB RAM even if you’re planning to use a 2-D CAD only.

The quality of graphic card in this case may be compromised when compared to buying it for gaming purposes, but a better Graphic Card would allow better designs to be formed. Regardless, CPU still holds a more pivotal position than a GPU.

If you are planning to do 3-D modelling, a better-quality Graphic card of at least 512 Mb of VRAM is required, otherwise for a 2-D modeling a comprisable 256 – 512 MB of VRAM should suffice.

A better and bigger screen size might not be a pre requisite for AutoCAD assisted laptop, but it is never a bad idea to use a larger display for the purpose.

Apart from the screen size, a display with a higher resolution will no doubt assist you into making a much better design with much more accurate color. In addition to that, since you will have to look at the screen for a longer period of time, you might get eye strains so a better-quality LED display will further minimize the problem.

For this purpose, a screen size of 15 – 17 inches with a full HD display is the best option, as it remains within the parameters of a portable device without any compromise on the quality.

When it comes to storage, you will probably have to choose between SSD or HDD, but the preferable among both of these is SSD, mainly due to its ability to improve the laptop’s performance, a higher writing and reading speed and with an additional benefit of reduced cost. So, if you want to cut the price somehow, this is the best option.

However, if you decide onto choosing HDD, your files access rate can be faster but only if you operate it on 7200 RPM or greater than this.

Additional characteristics

Although the following features must be taken into consideration when buying any laptop but its still a good practice to remind you of these

If you really are pleased by the design, it’s good news for you, because we’ve mentioned one of the most beautiful laptops out there so you wouldn’t need to compromise on the design in any aspect.

If portability is an issue for you, make sure you buy a device with lesser weight (do not compromise on the screen size!).

A better battery is never among the things anyone would like to neglect!

List of the Best Laptops for AutoCAD

All of the succeeding laptops are chosen to keep in consideration the aspects mentioned above and their reviews and ‘likeliness to be picked’.

Since all the laptops in this list are good from a different perspective, they are arranged in no specific order.

1. Asus ROG Zephyrus S

If price is not a problem for you, this laptop right here can be an absolute killer! With this around $1800 laptop with its top-notch specifications running AutoCAD would be a very smooth experience without any kind of lag. So, if you pick this as your choice, you will totally enjoy the experience of it.

An 8th Generation Intel Core i7 processor by no means falls behind any of the other processors out there. One of the most acceptable high-end processors will give you an experience like none other. 16GB DDR4 RAM and a 512GB SSD storage fulfill all the earlier mentioned features, thus 3-D designing would be a great experience. An NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 GPU is hardware like none other.

Display Specifications

It comes with a 15-inch full HD 144 MHz IPS display which means a beautiful display will be witnessed by the user. 15- inch screen, where suffices the need of this laptop, also provides some sort of compaction in the overall design.

Weight and Battery Life

Weight of the device is a reasonable 2.087 Kilos (given its heavy specifications) and can last up to 5 hours without any need for a plugin, so this device has no compromise in this aspect too.

The laptop has a sleek design and is a solid build. Its magnesium-aluminum alloy is again a factor providing a tough feel so you won’t feel hesitation carrying it anywhere. Plus, the backlit keyboard provides an additional design benefit as well as your ease to use it in darker areas.

2. Lenovo Thinkpad P53s

Another portable laptop enters the list with better pricing than the Asus Rog but still costs about $ 1330.There might be some Lenovo lovers who would love to stick to this brand, and for them, this is the perfect Lenovo device!

The 8th Gen Intel quad-core processor and the latest NVIDIA Quadro professional graphics are sure to provide you a reasonably powerful performance. SSD Memory with up to 2TB storage and up to 48GB of memory will make sure the user is totally free of all those lag problems.

Display Specifications

A 15.6-inch display comping with a magnificent 4K UHD specification available with a Dolby Version HDR technology. These specifications ensure that the user gets to see beautiful colors with even beautiful contrast.

Weight and Battery Life

A device with 1.75 kgs of weight and 57Wh, 3-cell battery again satisfies the user with a very portable design and a considerably big battery life which could last up to 14 hours! What’s even more appealing is that the device comes with a fast charging support. 10/10 in this area!

A mobile workstation just 19mm thin is astounding. Extremely robust plastic which is combined with glass fiber tells itself how sturdy of a device this is going to be. Definitely not as sturdy as the Asus, but for the price difference, it’s a pretty good deal…

3. Acer Aspire 5

If you have gone through the previous laptops and are annoyed by their prices, DO NOT WORRY AT ALL!! This laptop will never be a strain on your pocket and believe me, with a cut of few specifications, this beast manages to provide a performance which can be compared to many higher-end laptops!

It comes with a dual-core i3 and a quad-core i5 processor, obviously, the latter one being preferable for AutoCAD. By spending another $100, you can obtain this device with a new 10th-gen Core i5, entry-level Nvidia MX250 discrete graphics, and a 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD.  Obviously, the processor isn’t similar to those in the previously mentioned laptops, but it should suffice (do not forget this is a budget laptop).

Display Specifications

A 15.6-inch (16:9) 1920 x 1080-pixel display again proves to be great for the user. There has been made no compromise on the screen size so even though you are paying less, you would get the exact same size required for AutoCAD.

Weight and Battery Life

The device weighs 1.739 Kgs so it is even a tad handier than the Lenovo Thinkpad P53s. The battery may last up to 9 hours, depending upon the usage. Again, regardless of the price, the Laptop will provide sufficient ease to all the engineers and architects out there.

This might not be the best-designed laptop. The material seems a bit rigid and opening the lid with one hand isn’t a very easy task. Although the plastic frame may have provided a cut in weight but the physical appearance has been compromised here. Regardless, this laptop is still a value for price device.

4. Dell G5 15

For all those readers who were waiting for a laptop from Dell, well here it is. One of the most widely used laptop companies in the world, obviously the expectations would be high, and we are very proud to say that Dell has lived up to its expectation.

The device is boosted by a 2.3 Giga Herts intel core i5-9300 processor so it is supposed to give you a very brilliant performance and 3-D designing through CAD would never be a trouble for you.      Memory: 8GB DDR4 SDRAM 2666MHz.         Graphics: 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650. Storage: 256GB SSD + 1TB 5,400rpm HDD
All these things combined, ensure you value for money device and performance not found elsewhere. Brilliant!

Display Specifications

Dell G5 15 comes with a 15.6-inch screen size packing a 1,920 x 1080 display will not allow you to miss the slightest of details and the colors and the contrast is well very brilliant. The screen size isn’t very different from any other laptops in this list, and is totally under the parameters of a portable and reasonable screen seize device.

Weight and Battery Life

90-WHr battery coming with the device would play a very long-lasting role so the architects on the move would not have much reluctance carrying it around. The 1.68 kg device isn’t much different from the previous laptops in this list thus portability isn’t any issue by any regards.

The keyboard is backlit with blue light and has two levels of brightness. You may want to get a keyboard with RGB lights by paying $30 more, but for the purpose you have to buy it for, we don’t think it’ll be a necessary step.

What’s even better about the design is that the bezels are thinner compared to its last versions, providing a sleek look and an elegant design, hence the body becomes smaller and thinner.

5. Lenovo Ideapad L340

Next in our list is another laptop very well known for gaming. But something being good at one aspect does not mean that it is bad at another. In fact, this laptop outperforms many others when you use it for AutoCAD. With its heavy list of specifications, it always was destined to be a part of our list. What’s even better is that it is much affordable as compared to many others in this list. Since there are many models for this laptop, it’s an understood factor that the pricier, the better.

A gaming laptop can not let you down when it comes to performance. Coming with a 9th Generation Intel Core i5-9300H processor, along with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of NVMe SSD will no doubt provide you very smooth performance for any purpose. The base clock speed of the processor is 2.4 GigaHertz which can be maxed up to 4.1 GigaHertz in its turbo mode, therefore you will indeed see a pretty decent performance. Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 graphic card has been installed by Lenovo (actually two different variants of this, you will get each depending on the laptop variant) so remain satisfied with this aspect.

Display Specifications

The 15.6-inch screen will be seen in this laptop with an antiglare effect and an even better viewing angle, plus you will see very beautiful colors on this screen. The refresh rate of the IPS panel is 60 Hertz, not one of the best refresh rate of gaming laptops out there, but you will no doubt still be satisfied and won’t face a significant problem while performing AutoCAD.

Weight and Battery Life

Weighing a tad over 2 kilos (2.082 Kg), this laptop is not one of the lightest laptops of our list. So, all the engineers and architects on the go might feel a slight discomfort carrying it around when compared to the other devices mentioned here. The battery will last you about 6.5 hours, which might as well not be the best in our list, so I must say this one aspect is not up to the mark and can be a hindrance to the portability factor.

The design aspect of this laptop has not been compromised. The edges are quite thin and the palm rests are quite comfortable. The material from which it is made feels somehow premium and strong and this device is sure to give you quite high satisfaction when it comes to design.

6. AlienWare M15

Coming to another beast that enters our list. This laptop itself is Amazon’s recommendation. You will see a device with every specification polished and giving an outclass performance in every aspect. The device brought to you by DELL is one of the most promising devices out there, especially if you are getting this for AutoCAD, you will never be disanointed.

With a processor of 2.6GHz Intel Core i7-9750H and obviously a 64-bit Windows 10 home, this laptop might be one of the most promising devices of this list. With a memory specification of 16GB DDR4 SDDRAM 2,667MHz, Storage of 1TB (2x 512GB PCIe M.2 SSD) RAID 0, and the Graphics specification equipped with 8GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 with Max-Q design, this laptop is going to be a total beast in its performance. This is one of the laptops with whom we were fully satisfied. 2-D and 3-D designing with AutoCAD will work buttery, and it will actually be an experience like none other.

Display Specifications

The display is again a very comfortable 15.6-inch with 240Hz 1,920×1,080 display so needless to say, its again, one of the greats. The colors are crisp and bright, which will make your designing experience even better. The 4K resolution screen with an OLED panel is sure to give you a flawless experience of AutoCAD. Brilliant!

Weight and Battery Life

The device comes with a weight of 2.16 Kilos, not the most reasonable weight and the heaviest in our list, but given its specifications, the weight is pretty justified. The battery will allow you about 6 hours after charge and I do not think there’s any flaw in this. So overall, the device performs reasonably in this area, but this does not mean it’s any lesser.

MAGNIFICIENT! The best design in this list. With its unique design and ultrathin panels, a beautiful keyboard set upright in the middle, backlit with blue light. In fact, Alienware M15 is the slimmest Alienware laptop ever!

Regardless of how slime the device is, you are going to make no compromises in the ports. The customer gets to see all of the standard ports one needs. Needless to say, this device is a killer choice.

Since we have mentioned all the requirements of a laptop for AutoCAD previously, none of these laptops deviated from those. Some of these were very expensive and you get to see the same quality of specifications in them, yet some are cheaper and the quality cut is also as big. It’s a no brainer if you want the best specifications like those in Asus ROG Zephyrus S or Alienware M15 you will have to pay more, but if your budget is tight, laptops like Acer Aspire 5 are there for you. If you’re looking for something where you would be mentally satisfied that your getting very good specifications and your budget is something in between, its totally fine, go for Lenovo Thinkpad P53s.

Reiterating a previous point, all these laptops will be pretty decent at AutoCAD, be it 3-D designing or any other feature you wish to use. You cannot go wrong if you blindly pick any one of these, because we have made sure to add only those laptops in this list which are entrusted and come from entrusted companies.

We hope this article helped you make a choice!
